Grade: 10th-11th
Subject: Metacognition
Time: 15 minutes
Goal: Use ChatGPT to reflect on how they learn, identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and generate personalized learning strategies.
0:00–2:00: Teacher Demo: “ChatGPT as Your Personal Learning Coach”
- Teacher shows ChatGPT the prompt: “Act as my learning coach. Ask me questions to help me understand how I learn best.” If the model asks why the teacher wants to understand how you learn, say you want to improve the way you learn.
- ChatGPT responds with diagnostic questions like “When you think about your past experiences: when did you learn something best and what did you do differently?”
- Teacher models answering one question honestly and shows how ChatGPT uses the answers to create a personalized strategy.
- Teacher says: “ChatGPT can’t learn for you — but it can help you understand how to learn better.”
2:00–7:00: Mini-Challenge #1: Your Learning Profile
- Students run the coaching prompt on their own devices: “Act as my learning coach. Ask me questions to understand my learning strengths and challenges.”
- They answer ChatGPT’s questions briefly and honestly.
- Then they ask: “Based on my answers, summarize my learning profile in 4–6 sentences.”
- Students read their personalized summaries.
7:00–11:00: Mini-Challenge #2: Build Your Personalized Study Method
- Students now ask: “Now give me 3 concrete study strategies that match my learning profile.”
- Examples ChatGPT might provide:
- spacing study sessions
- rewriting concepts in their own words
- using diagrams or mind-maps
- practicing retrieval instead of rereading
- asking ChatGPT for quizzes
- teaching the concept to someone else
- Examples ChatGPT might provide:
- Students choose one strategy they want to try this week.
- Optional extension prompt: “Give me a 10-minute study routine tailored to my strengths.”
11:00–14:00: Whole Class Share: Metacognition Speed Round
- Students share:
- the strategy ChatGPT recommended
- whether it fits how they usually work
- anything surprising they learned
- Teacher highlights how metacognition improves academic success.
14:00–15:00: Exit Ticket
- Students complete: “One thing I learned about how I learn today is ______, and one strategy I want to try this week is ______.”
